Something happened with Ethan (5) this week that I can finally understand in light of his NLD diagnosis…and besides being enlightening, it cracked me up! I thought I’d share…
Ethan and my daughter (a year older, and very protective) kept coming home telling me about the “mean girl” in school who kept picking on Ethan. I tried to offer suggestions, but basically kept my nose out of it until the day my daughter came home crying. Apparently it had escalated into one of those “If you play with HER, I won’t be your friend” kind of playground battles between several girls, with my daughter being “HER.” She said that the other girl’s mother had called the principal because Kimberly (“the mean girl”) didn’t want to come to school because she was so upset by it all. I figured she couldn’t be too “mean” if this was the case, and she obviously didn’t want to continue to fight if it upset her so. So I encouraged the girls to forgive each other (which they did, and are now “best friends”…isn’t childhood wonderful that way?) and had a talk with Kimberly’s mom. It turns out that Kimberly, a friendly little kindergartener with beautiful blonde, curly hair, has a crush on Ethan! She was trying to get his attention and “flirt” with him, but he misread her intentions completly and thought she was picking a fight! My innocent little Ethan has yet to make his first real friend, much less be aware of girls and crushes! And when it turned into a big misunderstanding, he didn’t even notice. When I told my husband the story he asked what Kimberly looked like (go figure). When I answered that she was the prettiest little thing, his only reply was “Hmmmmm…I better have a talk with my boy!”
